District 3, 2024, stained spray paint on raw canvas
107 x 102 cm
Erik Sommer is an American artist and curator living and working in New York. His work is about chance, beauty and the attempt to control time.
For his recent spray paint paintings he employs a method of staining, soaking and transferring paint through various mediums. He starts by layering raw canvas on top of each other and heavily soaking the outer canvas until the color seeps through to the canvas behind. Relying on controlled chance, Sommer manipulates these effects to create aleatory marks and images that appear bold and vibrant yet also blanched and aged.
By recreating the aging process Sommer is able to affect time in a way that allows each piece to exist within an absence of time.
